making mp3s from youtube music videos

For my first ever tech post, I've decided to share with everyone on how to make decent mp3s from YouTube clips. This happened because my internet provider (its Streamyx, FYI) throttles down my torrents and my P2P software. Well, fuck 'em.

I've found another way to get my mp3s. Plus I think there are lot of YouTube folks that are very talented and I would proudly download their work off the internet and add their work to my playlist.

Here's what you need:

Ingredients:

And here's how you do it.
Preparations:
STEP 1: PREPPING YOUR BROWSER
Using Internet Explorer

  1. On the Internet Explorer menu, click on Tools -> IEPro Preferences -> User Scripts

  2. Make sure that "Enable User Scripts" is checked and click on the script "Download video". Click OK to exit

Using Mozilla Firefox

  1. Click on Tool -> Addons. You will see a popup window. Click on Extensions. Make sure that DownloadHelper is listed as one of the installed addons.

STEP 2:DOWNLOADING YOUR VIDEOS
If you are reading this, I have to assume that you already have a song (video in YouTube) in mind that you intend to convert to mp3. A simple YouTube search will probably return like at least 10 different versions of the song that you would like to convert. So I guess, the next step is narrowing down to the right video to convert. Here are some few rules that I follow.

Using Internet Explorer

  1. If you have configured your IE7Pro's add-in correctly, you should see something like what's below

  2. Click on "download video" link on top of the page, and it will bring you to download page. Right click on the given link, and make sure you save the file with a .flv extension.

Using Mozilla Firefox

  1. Click on Tools -> DownloadHelper, and click on the file that you would like to download.
  2. Save the file with a .flv extension.

STEP 3: CONVERTING TO MP3

  1. Install and launch Freez FLV to MP3 Converter.

  2. Please refer to the picture below on how to convert the flv file to mp3:

Feel free to experiment with different Bit rate and Frequency. I wouldn't recommend going crazy with the bit rate (high bit rate) because the videos posted in Youtube are usually low in quality.

STEP 4:EDITING THE MP3 CLIPS
Remember what I say before about "people who like to put credits" in other music videos, after converting the flv files to mp3, you will need to remove the "credit" portion from your mp3 file. Here's how you do it.

  1. Install and launch Audacity.

  2. Click on File -> Open to open the mp3 file that you would like to edit.

  3. Click on Play, and look at the play indicator. Take note of the position of the indicator where the "credit" portion starts and ends on your clip. Highlight that section (Tip: If there is no sound, it usually shows a straight line without any waves) and hit the "Delete" key on your keyboard. Look at the picture below:

STEP 5(OPTIONAL): SETTING THE ID3 Tags
I don't know about you, but I really hate it when the mp3 player shows, "Now playing: Unknown Track 01". That usually happens when the "author" of the mp3 clip forgot to enter the ID3 tags. Here's how I do it:

  1. Right click on your mp3 file, and left click on Properties.
  2. Click on the Summary tab. You should be given fields to enter the Artist, Album, and etc. If you don't, try clicking on the Advance button.
  3. Most of the time, I just enter 3 fields, which are Album, Artist and Title, and use the Windows Media Player to search for the rest of the info. That's it. Have fun trying.

Update: Nov 13, 2007
I found another way to make mp3 using another tool. Freez FLV to MP3 Converter, though being advertised as a free tool, it actually expires. Please check out my other post " another way to make mp3 from youtube video ".

Thank you very much for the tip. It was very helpful, but:
The 'Freez FLV to MP3 Converter' was only "free" for two convertions. Then I was asked to register.

Have you discovered a program that is free yet?
